The Supreme Court has given a big blow to former Lok Sabha MP Anand Mohan, convicted of the murder of IAS officer G Krishnaiah. The court asked him to register his presence at the local police station every fortnight along with submitting the passport. A bench of Justices Surya Kant and KV Vishwanathan gave the Center the last chance to file its affidavit on the immunity granted to Mohan, who was serving life imprisonment in the 1994 murder case of then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah. Issuing the order, the bench said that “the respondent (Anand Mohan) should immediately surrender his passport at the local police station and mark his presence at the police station every fortnight.”
Anand Mohan’s lawyer requested for reconsideration
The bench said it is listing the matter for final hearing on February 27 and will give a maximum of 60 minutes to both the sides to complete the arguments. Anand Mohan’s counsel urged the bench to reconsider the direction to surrender the passport and register his presence at the local police station. But the bench said that it had passed this order in view of the involvement of the defendant (Mohan) in other cases.
What is the story of Anand Mohan going to jail?
The then Gopalganj District Magistrate G Krishnaiah, a resident of Telangana, was beaten to death by a mob in 1994. In Muzaffarpur, the funeral procession of gangster Chhotan Shukla was going and he was trying to overtake the procession with his vehicle. Anand Mohan was the MLA at that time and he was leading that procession. IAS G Krishnaiah’s car was continuously blowing its horn to pass. Anand Mohan was accused of instigating the mob to murder G Krishnaiah and the result was that the mob dragged G Krishnaiah from the car and beat him to death.
